Welcome to our latest blog post, and this week we’re looking at what the most popular used cars on CarXpert were in May.

CarXpert lets you rate used cars based on their MOT history, and it’s those ratings that are the basis for this article.

If you haven’t tried CarXpert’s used car rating system, you can try it here – just pop in the registration number of the car you want to rate.

So, which used car was the most popular?

In May, that was the Volkswagen Golf.

Volkswagen Golf Mk6

You may have noticed that the car pictured isn’t the current Golf model it’s a Golf Mk6. The reason for that is that the average age of the cars rated in May was just over 12 years, and 12 years ago the Golf Mk6 had just been launched in the UK.

Most Popular Models

Here’s the full top 10 for May with the percentage of total number of ratings carried out by make and model:

Between them, these 10 models accounted for more than 30% of all the cars that were rated by CarXpert users in May.

Most Popular Fuel Types

When it comes to powering their cars, CarXpert users are still showing a strong interest in Diesel, with almost half of rated cars being Diesel powered.

Here’s the breakdown of cars that were rated on CarXpert in May by fuel type –

Age of Cars Rated

At the start of the post we mentioned that the average age of cars rated in May was just over 12 years. Here’s the proportion of rated cars by age category –

As we saw last month, the biggest single category is cars in the 11 to 15 years old bracket, accounting for 35% of rated cars in May.

Finding good cars in that age group can be difficult. Indeed, our analysis suggests that the average life expectancy of a car is around 13 years, so clearly some cars over 11 years old get problems that aren’t worth repairing. You can increase the odds of finding a good older car (and avoiding the bad ones) by getting a CarXpert rating based on a car’s MOT history here.

We hope you found this brief summary of what we’ve been seeing on CarXpert over the last month interesting, and if there’s any other topics you’d like us to cover please let us know in the comments.
