We’ve noticed that there seem to be quite a lot of people on the internet asking questions like “Can I get a good used car for under £5,000?” or “What’s the best used car I can get for £5,000?”. So for this week’s 5 Star Car feature we set ourselves the challenge of finding a car that got 5 Stars on CarXpert’s used car rating system for under £5,000.
And here it is. As you can see from the picture it’s a Honda Jazz, on sale for £4,580 at a dealer near Potters Bar. It has a flawless MOT history hence the 5 Star rating, and it’s only showing just over 5,000 miles on the clock.
So, did we have to spend hours trawling the internet to find this very promising looking car? Actually, no – though we did do a few things to improve the odds.
- We put the keywords “service history” into the Autotrader search, as a car that’s been maintained properly is more likely to be in good condition.
- We filtered on mileage below 60,000 miles, as while there are some good higher mileage cars out there, on average lower-mileage cars show less signs of wear and tear.
- We only looked at Hondas on the basis that they tend to do better than average on CarXpert’s rating system, as shown by the Jazz coming in at number 1 in our list of best used superminis.
It still took us a little while to find this example – maybe 20 minutes – but we did come across quite a few 4 Star cars in that time, so it looks like if you are looking for a good used car under £5,000 then you’re in with a chance.
